Dr. Christian Piers

Dr. Piers grew up in Holland, Michigan, where he attended Hope College and earned a triple-major in English, chemistry and biology. While in school he participated in a Guinness Record-holding tug-of-war called, “The Pull,” and met his wife, Rachael, on the first day of orientation. They got married after graduation and two days later moved to the Big Island of Hawaii, where he worked as a seahorse farmer and manta ray night-snorkel guide.

Dr. Piers first fell in love with North Carolina while still living in the islands, flying twice a year to his graduate school campus at Warren Wilson College in Swannanoa. After earning a Masters of Fine Arts degree in creative writing from WWC, followed by a Doctorate of Dental Surgery in Colorado, he and Rachael returned to North Carolina for his residency in orthodontics at UNC-Chapel Hill.

Dr. Piers loves working with other dentists as part of a team to create the best possible smiles. While in dental school, he served as national president of the American Student Dental Association, and was the official spokesperson for 22,000 members including 90% of US dental students. His writing has appeared in ADA News, Dental Economics and the Journal of the American Dental Association (JADA), and he currently serves on the JADA editorial board.

Dr. Piers has always been interested in the growth and development of the face and jaws, and was recognized in dental school with the American Association of Orthodontists Award for the Demonstration of Outstanding Qualities in the Study of the Oro-Facial Complex. He was further recognized in residency with the Greg and Andrew MacArthur Brooks Fellowship in Orthodontics, a three-year fellowship at UNC- Chapel Hill.

Dr. Piers loves surfing, skiing, and scuba diving, and when he’s not working to create beautiful smiles, you can find him hiking in the Blue Ridge Mountains with his wife, daughter, Kai, and dog, Nai’a. Please give them all a warm welcome to our team here in Hickory and Morganton!
